Homeless Camp Cleanup, 27 June 2009

Mark (who lives in the camp) hands trash bags full of empty bottles to Lavaughn. The bottles will be recycled. Clothes hang on trees on the path down to the men's camp. An Americorps volunteer (left) and my friend Lee (right) clean up the men's camp.
Americorps workers doing camp cleanup. Audrie, my ministry partner, gets down and dirty. Literally. Look. I helped. ;)
This is Keith, in the camp where he lives. Keith needs surgery for a herniated disk. It hurts to walk, so he only makes it up to Greensboro Urban Ministry to eat about every other day. :( Manuel sits on the porch at Mark's place. TRAIN!!!!
This is Mark, sitting on his bed. Manuel shows me his place. This is where Manuel sleeps.
Cotton makes these hanging candle holders for her friends. They're made from cans, with votive candles inside. Yeung, in front of her camp. She straightened things up (not that anything was out of place!) and carefully arranged the chair before I took this picture. Audrie and I with Yeung.
Yeung used leaves to make privacy screens on the sides of her camp. Cotton made these planters, from two-liter plastic bottles. (She loves Mountain Dew, and saves the bottles.) She's growing field peas in them, from seeds. Cotton sits on the bed in her camp.
Audrie and I talk to Cotton at her camp. Audrie is sitting in Cotton's wheelchair. An Americorps volunteer and I are sitting on stools made from buckets with blankets on them. Audrie and I show off the bottle planters that Cotton gave us. Mine is now in my vegetable garden, hanging from a tomato cage. :) Here it comes...
...and there it goes. Just before we left, Deb (NightWatch/DayWatch) showed up with more food, clothes, boots, etc. for our friends. :) Audrie filled up my laundry bag and a trash bag with dirty clothes from Cotton and the guys. She'll wash those and bring them back Monday. The day center on Bessemer has a washer and dryer, but it's located upstairs and there's no elevator. Cotton's in a wheelchair and Keith uses a cane. It's not accessible for them.
This is what the dumpster at the church looked like after the guys unloaded all the bags from the cleanup. I have a feeling our building manager may not be pleased... :O
