Single mom, flying a sign to pay the rent. Water, toiletries and food for homeless friends who live outside. These guys wrote a "thank you" to the property owner who allows them to stay. (Name cropped for anonymity.)
StreetWatch team members hang out with homeless friends. A shady spot on a warm spring day. Hanging on the "porch." ;)
On the way back to the cars, Audrie and Michele (StreetWatch founders) spot this sunflower wall and have to stop for a photo op! ;) Spring has come to the tent city. No more freezing nights, but homeless people tell us they prefer cold weather to hot. You can put on more clothes and blankets than you can take off. A dead snake on the path. One of the ladies who recently moved into an apartment made friends with a black snake who lived by her tent. Hope this wasn't him.
This used to be the largest camp in the tent city. The guys who lived here had to move to make way for the Greenway. Only one of the men who used to sleep in this camp is still staying at the FM tent city. He's now in a camp on the other side of the woods. This camp recently housed half a dozen men. In the years I've been visiting, it's housed many more. It's now abandoned, waiting for bulldozers to clear a path for the Downtown Greenway. Most of its most recent residents have moved on to better (inside!) circumstances.
One of the guys who lived in the camp in the path of the Greenway has since moved across the woods into a new location at the FM tent city. This is his new camp. This is the HOPE sign that hung from the tarp over the mens camp that has since been abandoned because the Greenway is coming through. The HOPE sign was a big deal to me. One of the guys apparently hung the HOPE sign on a tree after taking the tarp down to move it, and this is where I found it when I went looking for it the first time I came down there after the guys moved their stuff out of the camp. I have HOPE. (See the explanation on the previous photo.) HOPE remains. Always. Even when things change.
