StreetWatch, 12-05-2009: At one of the Freeman Mill homeless camps, with Mark. StreetWatch, 12-05-2009: Finally got a storage unit. But... this is just the stuff from Audrie's house, a donation pick-up we made, and my truck. We haven't gotten our stuff from the basement at Grace yet. Oh no!! (Fortunately, I like to organize!! I'm already planning in my head...) StreetWatch, 12-05-2009: Mark got a bike and Yong got boots (he's holding them). He's excited that he'll be able to get around now.
StreetWatch, 12-05-2009: Two new campsites. StreetWatch, 12-05-2009: My favorite thing at the big camp. Hanging from a tarp line. It says... HOPE. l-r, front: Yong, Valerie (Mark's niece), Jason (Mark's nephew)
l-r, back: Audrie, Paul, Chris
Audrie hugging (understatement) Mark and Yong. ;) J.R. doesn't usually let anybody take his picture, but to shut me up (I'm pretty sure), he goofed off with me and let Audrie take our picture. Thanks, J.R.!! Roasting marshmallows by the fire at the guys' camp.
Saying good bye (for now) to Miss Yong at the road near her camp, and wondering why Sarah and Deanna were taking pictures of us Hugging my Miss Yong Me & Miss Yong
Doing street outreach today: We gave Alexander some things he needed, then Kevin prayed for him. When he finished, Alexander prayed the Lord's Prayer, then talked about how Jesus taught His disciples to pray. As he spoke, I looked up and saw the sign above his head... ;) Bringing order to chaos... THANK YOU!!! If you'd seen the "before" picture, you'd really be impressed, but I was too embarrassed to take one. Suffice it to say that it was just a ginormous pile of chaos, trying to move our stuff from our old storage space in a church basement to the new space with more stuff coming in at the same time. Now there is order and we can quickly get in, get what we need and get it back out to the homeless and hungry people who need it! Thank you, Nancy, Catherine, Hayes, Deanna and Derek for all your help today! And p.s., the stuff in the middle (and more) is for Mary's House, Arlington House, Salvation Army and Mt Zion WE Shelter. Once that's all distributed, it will be soooo lovely!! ;)
Sgt. Bud Blaylock took this photo of Audrie and I sorting through donations for the homeless at the WROC. (Well, she was sorting. I was on the phone finding out if Salvation Army needed children's coats.) GPD Watch Operations, 2602 S. Elm/Eugene St., is accepting donations of tents, sleeping bags, coats and thermals for StreetWatch. Everything in this truck has to fit into that (already full) storage unit. Hmmm...
Doing MANual labor. Getting it done. Eating (Americorps!!) chicken soup on the back of my truck, near the camp with Mark. Photo by Derek. Don was standing nearby. Double trains! You know it's a good StreetWatch day. ;)
Me & my StreetWatch partner. I wished for no more homelessness for Mark. Mark wished for no more mental illness for me.
On Derek's StreetWatch scooter at the VIYC.org food drive at HT Preettyy lights. With Kat, Mark & Yong on the way back to camp. Photos in the dark. By the fire at the FM camps.
Visit a homeless camp and who do you see? Kimi & Philip came by, too. :) Wearing my PJ pants, chilling on the shoe chair in the woods by a homeless camp. I was sick this day. Going for a little visit to see my friends in the woods helped. It's comforting and peaceful there, and my friends at the camps care about me and always make me feel loved and welcome. (So does my teammate Derek, who went with me!) Derek sits on a stiletto shoe chair in the woods
Audrie says I look stupid in this hat. CLEARLY she's jealous of how SEXY I look. Duh. Miss Yong & me, in her for-now place. :) My circle of friends just keeps getting bigger. God is good, all the time. :)
Haha! I look like a dork and Mark just looks annoyed. InvisiblePeople.tv Road Trip USA, in Greensboro NC, near the Freeman Mill homeless camps (videos: Cotton, Young, Jim). Someday, I'll get out to the Best Coast and meet his peeps. With Miss Yong at the FM camp, the day before she moved into her own apartment! Look! It's Baby Girl, Keith's new puppy, down at the FM camp. Her sister is Bella, Kim & Philip's newest furbaby.
Irony: Pill-covered car ("Free delivery! 1-800-454-DRUG") sits outside substance abuse treatment center in Greensboro. Judgment fail. :( Baby Girl isn't interested in the derailed train and all the action going on around here. She just wants to climb around and bite stuff. And people. LOL. With the temperature over 90°F before noon, Sarah and I headed downtown to give out cold water to homeless folks. This man had fallen asleep on a bench under a tree at Center City Park. We left him a bottle of water. A park attendant was right behind me, getting ready to wake him up, when I took this photo. No sleeping in the park. :(
Sarah and I gave out bottles of icy cold water at Center City Park in downtown Greensboro to help homeless people beat the 90°F+ heat, but as we gave out the last bottles, we were told by a park attendant that we weren't supposed to be doing that. Uh oh... He did, however, agree to take a photo of us before we left. LOL.
